Introduction to the University of St Andrews
Founded in 1411, St Andrews is Scotland's oldest university, and, in the whole of Britain, is only younger than Oxford and Cambridge. The 6,000 students at history-rich St Andrews make up one-third of the population of this small city, 45 miles from Edinburgh. St Andrews is also famous as the home of golf.
Given its august history, St Andrews' excellent academic reputation is probably no surprise. It is best known for its humanities courses - English, philosophy, modern languages and history of art all do well - and is also strong in sciences. St Andrews hosts the largest optical telescope in Britain and a £2m extension to the Gatty Marine Lab will research seals, whales and dolphins.
With something like 40% of students coming from independent schools, and a similar proportion from England, St Andrews has a bit of a toffy reputation, although fee concessions for Scots students may affect the balance in the future. The fact that Dundee took all the vocational courses when it split from the university in the 1960s does not make it any harder for St Andrews' graduates to find careers.
The students' association makes a good show of running entertainments and there is a strong culture of clubs and societies. There are also traditions with names like Raisin Monday and Mothers' Tea Parties (don't ask).
First years are guaranteed accommodation, but only if they apply on time.
Among the alumni of St Andrews are Fay Weldon, Alex Salmond and Madsen Pirie of the Adam Smith Institute.
