Hold me close babyposted 08/08/2006The awarding of PhDs at the University of Salford has got all 'touchy-feely' after midwifery lecturer, Mary Price received her doctorate for research into cuddling.Mary, who teaches at the University's School of Healthcare Professions, has spent five years studying mother and baby relationships at Rochdale Infirmary to see what effect early physical contact has. She's found that there are huge benefits to be had by mothers cuddling their babies - especially in the hour just after birth. She believes that without this initial contact a child's whole future life could be affected: "A newborn baby will nearly always cry and people think that it's normal. But it isn't - it's crying for a reason and if it is receiving comfort from its mother straight away, it realises it can seek comfort in others."Her findings have been adopted by Rochdale Infirmary's maternity unit and she hopes they will soon be spread to other hospitals across the country. She said: "It's such a simple practice and it really can make a difference."EndsNotes to editorsDr Price is available for comment on the following topics as a University of Salford expert:Breastfeeding, action research , problem-based learning, curriculum planning, babies and children.
